For seven years after completing acupuncture school in 2001, I had the privilege of working alongside Dr. Charles Gerson, the founder of the Mind-Body Digestive Center and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. During this period, I worked with patients with challenging gastrointestinal conditions such as Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease, and Colitis.
Encountering patients with extensive medical histories was a regular occurrence. Many of these individuals had explored conventional treatments but had not considered acupuncture. It was particularly rewarding to witness how a straightforward diagnosis from an acupuncturist’s perspective could provide significant relief to those suffering from long-term chronic conditions
My time under Dr. Gerson’s mentorship profoundly influenced my approach to healthcare when I established my own acupuncture practice. I remember Dr. Gerson once saying to a patient “They’ve done everything right with you, now let’s get you better.” You can do everything right and still not have the right approach. I emphasize the acupuncture being a part of a patient’s healing, not exclusive. And I will never advise a patient to go against the advice of their physician.
